2011 La Manga Ten Nations Tournament

The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team under the direction of head coach April Heinrichs will travel to La Manga, Spain, from Feb. 28-March 9 for three games at the Ten Nations Tournament.

CARSON, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2010) -- The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team under the direction of head coach April Heinrichs will travel to La Manga, Spain, from Feb. 28-March 9 for three games at the Ten Nations Tournament. The USA will face Sweden (March 4), England (March 6) and Norway (March 8). There is no winner in the tournament as each team will play three friendly matches. Also participating in the tournament are Scotland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Denmark and Italy. There will be five games on each of the three match days. The 18-players chosen for the trip were all born in 1992 and 1993. The squad is led by midfielder Samantha Mewis, who has already played in a U-17 and a U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup, midfielder Mandy Laddish of NCAA champion Notre Dame, midfielder Morgan Brian, the 2010 Parade Girls’ Soccer player of the Year, Mollie Pathman, the 2010 Gatorade Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year, and forward Lindsay Horan, the leading scorer for the U.S. U-17s in 2010.

The U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team was locked in a 0-0 draw against Sweden at the Ten Nations Tournament in La Manga when the match was abandoned at halftime due to lightning.

LA MANGA, Spain (March 4, 2011) – The U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team was locked in 0-0 draw against Sweden at the Ten Nations Tournament in La Manga when the match was abandoned at halftime due to lightning. The rain started just after kickoff, persisted through the first half and then the thunder and lightning came just before the end of the first half. When the inclement weather persisted for over an hour, the match was abandoned.

U.S. head coach April Heinirchs had started the following eleven: Abby Smith; Arin Gilliland, Abby Dahlkemper, Mollie Pathman, Kassey Kallman, Morgan Brian, Samantha Mewis, Lindsay Elston, Julie Johnston, Kelly Cobb and Katie Stengel.

The USA will face England on March 6 and Norway on March 8 in, hopefully, better weather. - US Soccer Press

After having its first match against Sweden called on the account of lightning and then tying England 0-0, the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team finished the La Manga Ten Nations Tournament on a high note with a 2-0 victory over the Norway 

 

LA MANGA, Spain (March 8, 2011) – After having its first match against Sweden called on the account of lightning and then tying England 0-0, the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team finished the La Manga Ten Nations Tournament on a high note with a 2-0 victory over the Norway U-20 Women’s National Team.

The USA controlled the match out-shooting Norway 14-2 and got an early goal through Alaskan Kelly Cobb. In the 8th minute, U.S. captain Morgan Brian played through ball down the left side to Cobb who took a few touches, cuts inside at the 18-yard box and finished low to the far corner.

The USA sealed the match in the 80th minute through forward Taylor Smith, who had just come into the game four minutes earlier. This time it was Cobb playing the provider as she took the ball down the left wing, beating her defender around the outside to the end line before cutting a pass back to Smith at the near corner of the six -yard box. Taylor finished low to the far post to make it 2-0.

There was no winner in the tournament as each team played three friendly matches. Also participating in the tournament were Scotland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Denmark and Italy. The 18-players chosen for the trip were all born in 1992 and 1993.

The U.S. U-20s are at the beginning of the cycle working towards qualifying for the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup that was awarded Uzbekistan
